Cures for Insomnia
The cures for insomnia can be classified as behavioral treatments and medications. But before using any type of cure for insomnia, it is best to know the causes of such condition. Proper diagnosis of the cause of insomnia will give a proper cure and thus a higher success rate in eliminating the condition.
Behavioral Cures for Insomnia:
The use of behavioral cures can be equally or even more effective than medications. People who suffer insomnia are advised to first go into this type of treatment before finally taking in sleep medications.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The sessions aim to change the actions or thoughts that are supposedly cause sleeplessness. A therapist conducts these sessions either for one-on-one or group sessions. Common therapies for CBT can include relaxation training, sleep hygiene training, stimulus control and sleep restriction.
- · Lifestyle Changes. Without consulting a therapist changes in diet, sleep patterns and activities can be effective cures for insomnia.
1. Diet. Lessening the food intake before bedtime can help discomforts. Meals before bedtime can be incorporated with food containing melatonin which is known to calm and relax the body such as banana and oatmeal. Foods with tryptophan can also be incorporated such as almond, oat bread and turkey. Avoid or lessen caffeinated beverages in the afternoon or just before sleeping at night. Caffeine is known to increase heart rate and keep the body active when taken in. If there are drugs being taken regularly, consult a doctor if these medicines can cause insomnia. Check the label of these drugs if a substance called pseudoephedrine is included.
2. Sleep Patterns. Avoid taking naps during the day this can disrupt sleeping patterns at night. If it can’t be avoided take less time taking naps not more than 30 minutes. Also have regular schedule when sleeping and waking up to avoid any disruption in the body clock.
3. Relaxation. Find time to relax. Stress is one of the leading causes of insomnia. Give time for recreational activities that can help the mind off concerns. Yoga and other exercises can also help the body relax and unwind.
Cures for Insomnia in Medications
Medications are the last cures of insomnia most doctors recommend because some drugs can become habit-forming and some allergic reactions such swelling and unusual behaviors. Sleeping pills is the most common medications for insomnia this include Rozerem, Sonata, Lunesta and Ambien. Sedatives such as benzodiazepines can also help remedy sleeplessness. The side effects of such sedatives are fatigue, cognitive impairments and excessive drowsiness during the day. For over-the-counter medicines, they mostly contain antihistamines which can induce sleep. The downsides are dry mouth, daytime drowsiness and blurred vision.
Cures for insomnia greatly depend on the cause. For severe types of insomnia such as Fatal Familial Insomnia it is best to consult a specialist for a proper diagnosis and approach on the condition.
